As a prominent man’s son, Pastor Terry Pugh had a long road to travel to earn his own reputation.
The 60-year-old Port Arthur native was never told by his dad, the late Rev. J.T. Pugh, that he should become a minister, but he started preaching in the Houston area while at Texas Bible College and realized that was what he was supposed to do.
Graduating from high school in St. Louis, where Rev. J.T. Pugh directed the United Pentecostal Church International’s Home Missions Division, Pastor Terry Pugh was an Assistant Pastor for three years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He spent three years as an evangelist in Missouri, Mississippi, Florida, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Texas and Louisiana.
He came to the First United Pentecostal Church of Odessa, where Rev. J.T. Pugh was the Pastor, as an Assistant Pastor in 1978.
Pastor Terry Pugh became pastor of the 80-year-old church in 1992. The church averages 250 people at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. The church also meets at 6:30 p.m. Sunday evenings and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Pastor Terry Pugh preaches to help people deal with other people and have the Fruits of the Spirit — love, joy and peace. “The goal is to be like Jesus Christ. We will never attain that, but my responsibility is to help reduce the gap between who we are and who God wants us to be.” The availability of peace is another emphasis. “All things work for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Paul said, ‘Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.’ If you let peace rule and don’t try to manage the outcome, God will work out a way no matter what you are going through.”
